Sable Alley CampSable Alley enjoys a prime location on the 440,000 acre Khwai Private Game Reserve, adjoining the Moremi Reserve to the north-east. Overlooking a hippo-filled lagoon and within easy striking distance of the Delta's famous Khwai River, this stylish and comfortable camp offers excellent game-viewing as well as relaxing water-based activities to explore the channels and floodplains of the Okavango Delta.
The Khwai Reserve is one of the largest private concessions in Botswana, essentially linking the Okavango Delta with Chobe National Park, and featuring habitat elements from both ecosystems. While the bulk of the Reserve is comprised of dense mopane woodland, the southern portion around Sable Alley is characterized by fertile flooplains and riparian forest, and is home to a high diversity and concentration of wildlife.
Activities at Sable Alley are centered on day and night game drives in specially adapted open vehicles, focusing on the game-rich plains in the vicinity of the camp, but also with the option of traversing into the nearby Moremi Game Reserve. Walking and mekoro (dugout canoe) safaris are available to guests year-round, as are visits to the local Khwai Village (partners in the lodge); boating excursons along the channels of the Delta are offered during peak flood (April through August).
Set on the banks of a lily-covered lagoon, Sable Alley is known for its spectacular vistas, overlooking the game-rich lagoon and onward over vast flood plains. The camp is built in a traditional style, featuring copious canvas, wood, and thatch, but with a modern stylish twist. The main area is comprised of a comfortable sitting room, convivial bar, fire pit and swimming pool, with sundeck. Dinner is normally served al fresco, by candlelight surrounded by the cacophonous bush “orchestra,” or in the indoor dining area.
Long sandy pathways lead to the camp’s twelve tented rooms. Each is elevated on stilts with timber framing and canvas walls, decorated with “afro-chic” sensibilities. The spacious canvas-walled suites include a bedroom, an indoor sitting area with writing desk, and screen doors that open to a private veranda with uninterrupted views. An en suite bathroom features twin hand basins, an indoor and an outdoor shower – for those seeking to be closer to nature. Guests also have the opportunity to spend an evening away from camp in a star-bed, set high in a tree above a waterhole, open to the night sky.
