Windhoek

Windhoek is Namibia's capital and, by a wide margin, it's largest city - Windhoek's annual budget roughly equals the combined budget of all other local authorities across country. The fact that Windhoek's population is a mere 300,000 provides insight into just how sparsely populated this vast country is.

Windhoek is situated on the arid Khomas Hochland plateau, at an altitude of 5,600 feet above sea level. Temperatures rarely fall below 40 or exceed 90 degrees Fahrenheit, and rainfall is minimal. The first settlement in Windhoek was established in the 1840s, but the city was officially founded in 1890 by German Major Curt von François. Few travelers spend any length of time in Windhoek, it is usually an overnight connection point between destinations in Namibia and surrounding countries, but the city is home to some interesting examples of late 19th and early 20th Century German colonial architecture.
