Shopping in the Cape Winelands

Some of the Cape's best locally inspired shops are located on Huguenot Street in the historic winelands town of Franschoek. There you will find Indian Summer (50 Huguenot Street), a women's boutique carrying locally made necklaces studded with sapphire, topaz and citrine; Peacock Blue (next door) is a menswear shop selling sturdy safari bags by South African supplier Melvill and Moon. At Karoo Classics (58 Huguenot Street) you will find ostrich wallets and crocodile belts sourced from the nearby Karoo semi-desert. Up the street, Tallulah's (21 Huguenot Street) offers printed frocks by Mastik, while all the leather goods at Tsonga (40 Huguenot Street) are hand stitched in South Africa, including their signature shoes.

In Cape Town proper visit Cecile & Boyd's shop set in a restored Arts and Crafts villa with artworks, artifacts and furniture that define the bush-lodge aesthetic. It is headed by Boyd Ferguson who was responsible for designing Singita's signature properties. Robert Sherwood's studio shop at 173 Bree Street is curated with one-of-a-kind objects, such as gold leaf bowls by Bronze Age. Pan-African artisanal labels are stocked at Hanneli Rupert's 34 Long Street concept store, which carries such local brands as Cape Town's Frazer Parfum, bottled in local hand-blown glass; Lalesso, a womenswear label produced in Kenya; and Rupert's own Okapi leather handbags, which sport an instantly recognizable springbok-horn talisman.
