Long Dry Season (Jun-Sep)

This is peak season across East Africa, with warm days, cool evenings, and almost no rainfall. As the dry season progresses, grass dies back and trees lose their leaves, making it easy to see wildlife. Additionally, temporary waterholes dry up, causing wildlife to concentrate at the few remaining permanent water sources.

This is the timeframe when the wildebeest and zebra herds of the "great migration" concentrate in the northern Serengeti and Maasai Mara, in proximity to the Mara River. As the herds move back and forth across the rocky Mara River, they are exposed to the dangers of crocodiles and steep river banks, and they are also constantly preyed upon by the abundance of big cats that inhabit the Serengeti and Maasai Mara. It is a time of high drama on the savanna, and also the driest time of the year in the forests of Rwanda for primate trekking.

It is also the season when rates are at their highest across East Africa, Parks are most crowded, and availability most limited. There are ways to mitigate the crowding and, if seeing the migration with river crossings is your top priority, then this is the best time to travel; but there is much more to East Africa than river crossings and, for travelers with broader safari interests, there are other timeframes that hold significant advantages.
