Olivers Camp

Oliver's Camp enjoys a private setting in the remote southern reaches of the Tarangire National Park, close to the game-rich Silale Swamps. Far from the high-volume "circuit track", Oliver's offers access to some of the best dry season game-viewing in Tanzania, with a sense of exclusivity that is rare for such a prime location.

During the dry season months of July through October, Tarangire National Park hosts one of Tanzania's largest migrations as wildlife pours in from the Maasai Steppes and Great Rift Valley in search of water and fresh grazing, creating what is reputedly the country's highest concentration of wildlife. Apart from the sheer volume of game, the Park is particularly noted for its large elephant herds, rare antelope species, and beautiful landscape (dominated by baobabs and "umbrella" acacias).

From its secluded setting in the south, Oliver's focuses on game-drive safaris to take advantage of the abundant wildlife that concentrates along the marshy grasslands and Tarangire River. Night drives and walking safaris are also offered, while  adventurous travelers have the option of sleeping out under the stars in a specially erected fly camp. Balloon safaris at sunrise round out the impressive list of available activities.

Oliver’s authentically reflects the romance and elegant simplicity of a traditional safari camp, with the discreet addition of all the comforts a modern traveler might expect. In the main area you will find inviting deep leather sofas and a convivial bar –open to the wilderness beyond. Meals are taken communally in the candlelit dining room followed by digestifs and safari tales around the crackling campfire. A viewing deck overlooking the game-filled floodplain in front of camp is perfect for evening cocktails or whiling away siesta-time.

Accommodation is in fifteen spacious and well-designed tented rooms. The headboards are hand-carved from African mahogany and the color scheme has been carefully curated to reflect the bushveld and blur the demarcation between interior and exterior. All suites are en suite with spacious outdoor showers, and boast private furnished verandas.

Little Oliver’s Camp offers a more intimate retreat, with only five tented rooms nestled in a peaceful, remote setting overlooking the Minyonyo pools on the Tarangire River. The facilities are identical to main Oliver’s Camp – with all of the en suite rooms set on timber decking, with both indoor and outdoor showers. The thatched main “mess” tent provides a dining room, bar and comfortable sitting area – although most meals are taken out of doors on the expansive deck, whenever possible.

Oliver's and Little Oliver's are understated, unpretentious safari camps that over-deliver on experience. From the comfort of the rooms to the quality of the guides and the strength of the game-viewing, this is a hidden gem that warrants particular attention during the July-October dry season timeframe.
