Sand Rivers SelousSand Rivers Selous is a delightfully intimate safari lodge with a prime location on the banks of the Rufiji River, away from the busier parts of the Selous Reserve but with easy access to many of its most impressive features.
The Rufiji makes a wide, meandering bend directly in front of camp, providing spectacular views and easy boat access to this wildlife-rich River. Habitat diversity is a feature of the area and, in addition to the Rufiji, the camp has easy access to the shores of lakes Tagalala and Segese, as well as surrounding floodplains and miombo forest; wildlife is abundant with buffalo, lions, and leopards being particularly well represented.
Guests can enjoy the beauty and wildlife of the Selous by land and water. Game-drives in open safari vehicles provide close-up photographic opportunities, while walking safaris offer a more intimate connection with the African bush. Boating excursions upstream along the Rufiji River to Stiegler's Gorge are a highlight, traversing some of most unspoiled and game-rich regions of the northern Selous. More adventurous guests can sleep-out under the stars in Sand Rivers' signature "fly camp".
The stone-under-thatch main lodge is also open-fronted and spacious, with panoramic views, leading out to a large terraced area above the hippo-filled river and a small swimming pool. There is a library, bar, and a plethora of attractive dining spots to choose from.
Guests are accommodated in 8 stylish stone and thatched cottages set on the end of a wooded promontory, with superb views up the broad Rufiji River. All are raised on decks with open fronts that allow guests to feel connected to the vast wilderness beyond. Each room has en-suite facilities with an impressive shower, a large living space, veranda and a small plunge pool.
Kiba Point is a private retreat in the Selous, located a mile downstream from Sand Rivers. It is comprised of only 4 expansive open-fronted rooms. Bathrooms are defined as “bush deluxe,” with flush loos, indoor and outdoor showers. Each room has its own plunge pool set into the edge of its deck, and there is also a larger pool at the main lodge building, which is open-plan, thatched and stylishly furnished. Guests at Kiba Point enjoy a dedicated team of guides, a chef and staff to ensure a personalized and exclusive experience.
Sand Rivers was one of the first permanent camps established in the Selous, and few camps in the Reserve can rival it for location. Offering an outstanding balance between land and water experiences, and a rewarding sense of solitude, Sand Rivers is an ideal base from which to experience the raw beauty and wildlife of Africa's largest Game Reserve.
