Jongomero is one of the most remote safari camps in Tanzania - situated in the south-eastern corner of the country's largest National Park, Jongomero is 50 miles from its closest neighbor, and enjoys almost exclusive use of a good swath of Ruaha.
From its idyllic, well-shaded location on the banks of the seasonal Jongomero River, the camp is well positioned to take advantage of the exceptional biodiversity for which Ruaha is renowned. In addition to the Park's famous lions and healthy elephant population, the area around Jongomero attracts large herds of buffalo and abundant plains game. It is also one of the best parts of the Park for seeing rare sable and roan antelope.
The activity focus at Jongomero is game-drive safaris in specially adapted, open-sided vehicles seating a maximum of four guests, in search of Africa's exciting megafanua. The "big game" orientation of game drives is perfectly complemented by the more immersive experience of walking safaris, where attention turns to the Park's incredible biodiversity and 560 bird species. The more adventurous safari traveler will relish the "fly camping" option - a walking safari coupled with a sleep-out in a mobile camp complete with fire-cooked meal and bucket shower.
Blending in beautifully with its surroundings, the camp is set under a canopy of trees on the banks of the Jongomero sand river. The main camp features a convivial bar, library, sitting area and dining room, with an open wooden deck shaded by a high thatched roof and embellished with comfortable sofas and furniture made of reclaimed dhow wood. Below is a terrace that is used for dining al fresco, with a swimming pool beyond.
Accommodation at Jongomero consists of eight spacious and well-appointed tented suites, built on raised wooden platforms, under thatch, with spacious furnished verandas overlooking the game-rich riverbed. Each elegant suite features polished wooden floors, leather armchairs, and a unique eight-foot wide emperor bed made from reclaimed dhow wood and swathed in mosquito netting.
For solitude and privacy, there are few permanent camps in Tanzania that can top Jongomero, making it an ideal choice for seasoned travelers whose goal is to escape the "madding crowds" and experience the African bush in its wildest state. For more information about Jongomero Camp call toll-free: 888.227.8311
