Photography on Safari – Expert Tips

Renowned photographer, Harry Skeggs, has generously imparted his top photography tips to ensure the perfect shot every time.

•  Angle: experiment with getting low or standing up to take your photographs, rather than sticking to eye level.

•  Light: find the light rather than the subject. Even a great subject won't make for a great photo in unattractive light.

• Pre-visualise: have a clear idea of the type of image you would like to capture and discuss this with your guide so you are ready when the split-second action begins.

•  Eye contact: direct eye contact with your subject matter can be powerful in the image produced, so seek this out whenever possible.

•  Equipment: massive lenses can deliver superb close-up portraits, but don't leave the wide lenses at home. Wide angles can result in the subject filling the frame while capturing the habitat to add a sense of place.

Many camps and lodges in southern Africa, such as Mala Mala and Sayari Camp, are creating photographic safari vehicles that can comfortably accommodate three photographers along with their equipment. The vehicles include:  Drop-down sides for photographers to lie down for low-angle photographs; Three 360-degree swivel seats which recline, if required; Only front and back bars to hold up the roof, for fewer obstructions; Accessories such as beanbags, foam camera rests, charging points, and roll down sides for inclement weather.
