Good News for Rhinos

The Lewa Wildlife Conservancy in northern Kenya is leading the way in rhino conservation with another year of record-breaking births. Twenty-four white rhino calves were born on Lewa and Borana in 2021 — a record number — bringing the total number of rhinos to 238. Visit the luxurious Kifaru House, stylish Lewa Wilderness Camp housed in a family home, or the intimate Sirikoi Lodge to experience this baby boom firsthand and support the initiative.

2022 promises to be an exciting year for the Laikipia Region in Kenya in that black rhinos are set to return to the 57,000 acre Loisaba Conservancy. Rhinos once freely roamed the vast northern Kenyan landscape, but were poached out in the 1970s for their horns. To bring this ambitious project to fruition Elewana has joined forces with The Nature Conservancy, San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance, and Space for Giants to develop the required infrastructure to facilitate it. Read more in Forbes Magazine.  Loisaba Tented Camp is the perfect base from which to track the soon to be reintroduced Black Rhino, as well as view other unique animals, such as Grevy's zebra and reticulated giraffe.

Project Luangwa: New Initiatives

Project Luangwa is inspired by its newest project - Digitruck - a solar powered ICT classroom based at Chiwawatala School.  In partnership with "Close the Gap," and with the generous support of guests at Chiawa Camp, Digitruck will provide electronic tablets to one whole school grade, replacing the standard chalk board method in cramped and overcrowded classrooms. It is hoped that this pilot project will be expanded next year.

Vital Relief Aid for Rural Communities in Need

The impact of Covid-19 in Africa has been profound – particularly on rural communities dependent on tourism and wildlife conservation. This has resulted in two urgent needs - providing food security to people in need and protecting wildlife and wilderness areas from increased poaching threats. The direct correlation between rising food insecurity and poaching levels means they are two sides of the same coin. Wilderness Safaris is addressing both. Elewana and KwikBasket

The Elewana Collection has partnered with KwikBasket, a new agricultural tech initiative which works with local farmers and growers to give them access to fair markets and in turn, provides high quality fresh produce to its properties in Kenya. Instead of dispatching produce from Nairobi, Elewana obtains farm fresh local and seasonal fruit and vegetables for culinary menus from local growers and farmers. Since being a part of the program, Elewana has reduced its vehicle resupply runs to camps from every 10 days to every 14-16 days, simultaneously decreasing transportation costs and improving the brand's carbon footprint. From an operations standpoint, the partnership has also contributed to a significant drop in food waste, as often a large percentage of the fresh ingredients from Nairobi are spoiled in transit. Chef Nicky Bryden has worked closely with KwikBasket, adjusting Elewana's menus to suit local produce availability. Elewana guests have been sharing rave reviews on the new initiative and menus – join them by visiting Tortilis CampKifaru Lodge, or Sand River Mara.

Vehicle Update in Kenya

Also in Kenya, Tourism Cabinet Secretary Najib Balala has unveiled plans to restrict the use of vehicular transportation within all National Parks and Reserves to those that use non-fossil renewable energy by 2030 as part of the country's commitment to achieving sustainable tourism.
