Sighting of the Quarter

Guests at Chiawa Camp recently encountered a dramatic lion/buffalo hunt from start to finish, when the buffalo was rescued by about 60 of its brave bovine colleagues. The photo essay below comes to us courtesy of Grant Cummings, owner of Chiawa and Old Mondoro in the Lower Zambezi, Zambia.
The set-up, where the lion pride nonchalantly surrounded the buffalo herd ...
The pincer movement and first thrust of the lions to cause panic among the herd ...

The parry, where the buffalo turned and charged down upon the lions, while other lions nipped at their heels....
which caused panic and allowed the lions to separate a cow from the herd and climb aboard

as more lions climbed on, the cow began to lose the battle and almost collapsed to the ground
... but a rescue team arrived in the nick of time and the lions were sent scampering off into the shade for a rest, leaving the buffalos alive to fight another day.

Every day and night in Africa this scene, with lethal consequences for prey and predator alike, plays out, and long may it be so.
