National Geographic Focuses on Tswalu Kalahari, South Africa
11/1/2021
Research at Tswalu was the focus of a major feature in the August issue of National Geographic. Behind the magazine's iconic, yellow-bordered cover is a spectacular 28-page photo essay by photographer and explorer, Thomas Peschak.
Thomas spent a total of four months on the reserve for the purposes of this in-depth feature documenting the environmental challenges facing the Kalahari ecosystem. Through studying aardvarks, ground pangolins, the inhabitants of sociable weaver colonies, and more, research teams are distinguishing between the direct and indirect effects of climate change on Kalahari organisms and, ultimately, how changing conditions will impact the survival of these species.
Accompanying the visual storytelling by Thomas are evocative, yet hard-hitting, words by the South African science writer, Leonie Joubert. The story can be accessed here with subscription.
