Congratulations to Fred Krakowiak, a repeat client and friend of Classic Africa whose book "Africa, An Artist's Safari", won the 2008 Benjamin Franklin Awards competition for Large Format Cover Design. On the 15th of April 2008, Dr. Peter Rattray received an honorary Doctorate from the University of KwaZulu Natal on behalf of his son, David Rattray. Before his tragic death in January 2007, David Rattray achieved an international reputation for his battlefield tours from Fugitive's Drift Lodge in KwaZulu Natal, and overseas lectures. The team he put in place now continues this great tradition, entertaining guests with moving, passionate and detailed presentations on South Africa's fascinating and often turbulent history. 
The "Tourism for Tomorrow Awards" are the world's most prestigious awards in the tourism industry, recognizing and promoting best practices in sustainable tourism development all over the world. Grootbos Private Nature Reserve was one of three finalists of the Conservation Award, presented in April. Grootbos is an integrated development project incorporating tourism conservation and community projects. It lies in the heart of the Cape Floral Kingdom and with a track record of 12 years of research, boasts 745 plant species (including 102 critically endangered Red Data species) and 5 new species previously unknown.
