Property Updates

1/31/2024

Nomad Tanzania has launched its new Expeditionary Walking Camp, a "light-touch" mobile camp designed with ease of exploration and exclusivity in mind. The small private camp has just three tents and will operate year round in two national parks. From August to October, the camp will operate in the remote Ugolla National Park in western Tanzania, offering superb walking terrain and varied wildlife. From November to July, the camp will be located in Serengeti National Park. From November to February, it will be based in the eastern Serengeti Plains, March to April in the Gol Mountains and Salei Plains, and May to July in the western Serengeti, which becomes the heart of the migration corridor.

Angama Amboseli in the Kimana Conservancy, Kenya, welcomed its first guests on the 1st of November. Exclusive traversing rights of the 5,700-acre sanctuary, which incorporates a crucial migration corridor in the Amboseli ecosystem, ensures excellent game viewing. This intimate lodge of just 10 Suites draws design inspiration from the two "giants" of the landscape — the Super Tusker elephants and Mount Kilimanjaro.

La Residence in the Franschoek Valley of the Cape Winelands has reopened with some exciting updates. Recent enhancements include opulent gold leaf touches on the vibrant green and white upholstery in the Persian Alley, to reflect the lush orchards and rolling vineyards. All existing pools have been retiled, and each exclusive Vineyard Suite now boasts a plunge pool. The addition of an innovative underfloor hydronic heating system to the main dining hall underscores the property's commitment to sustainability – and to guest comfort. Meanwhile, Chef Gregory Henderson is overseeing the expansion of the organic vegetable gardens at La Residence, giving his kitchen team additional fresh, seasonal produce for their farm-to-fork cuisine.

In the Pipeline....

Natural Selections, Tawana Camp

Tawana Camp, due to open in May, will offer a unique perspective of the Okavango Delta and the wider wilderness ecosystem of northern Botswana. Tawana has been created to stand in harmony with the lush forests and grasslands that line the banks of the perennial Gomoti River, blending the romance of a contemporary safari camp with its surroundings.

Stretching across nearly 1,900 square miles, the Moremi Game Reserve is renowned for its high concentration of antelope, predators and large herbivores. Tawana is entirely unfenced, allowing the wildlife to wander through the heart of the camp, unhindered.

This new addition to the Natural Selection portfolio is born of a partnership with Chief Tawana Moremi, of the Batawana tribe. For centuries, his ancestors have called this land their home. Chief Tawana has collaborated with Natural Selection to safeguard this pristine ecosystem for future generations, while providing opportunities for his people to thrive.

Wilderness Bisate Reserve

Coming in September, at the edge of Rwanda's Volcanoes National Park, is Wilderness Bisate Reserve, perched high in the East African rainforest - optimal habitat for engaging interactions with mountain gorillas. Here luxury and exclusivity combine to create a perfect platform for experiencing these gentle giants, as well as golden monkeys, and over 200 magnificent bird species, set against the backdrop of six striking volcanoes.

Bisate Reserve is crafted with meticulous attention to detail. A spacious main area and just four expansive villas are perched on the rim of a weathered volcano, featuring private hot tubs. The lodge's architecture embodies the traditions of Rwandan royalty and its cultural heritage.

Artfully blending sophistication and sustainability, Bisate Reserve represents an extension of Wilderness Safaris' conservation efforts in Rwanda. The company recently planted its 100,000th indigenous tree through its reforestation project aimed at transforming a former agricultural site into a thriving forest. Now guests can weave themselves into this profound conservation tale, and actively participate in Bisate's conservation success story.

Kokoko Camp

Opening on July 1st in southern Tanzania, Kokoko Camp will provide an intimate and exclusive safari experience in the prime wildlife region of Ruaha, on the banks of the Mwagusi River.

The camp is booked on an exclusive-use basis for up to six guests, hosted by a professional safari guide. Visitors can enjoy exploratory walking safaris, game drives and night drives, star gazing, and romantic dinners surrounded by lanterns in the riverbed. Meals are cooked in a traditional fashion by camp staff over a crackling fire, exuding the true essence of safari.

There are just three guest tents at Kokoko, each made of mosquito net mesh to maximize views over the reserve. The tents boast an en suite bathroom with flush loo, bucket shower, and a weatherproof cover that can be folded back on clear nights to sleep under the stars.

Singita Milele

Singita Milele, an exclusive-use villa situated high on the slopes on Sasakwa Hill in the heart of northern Tanzania's Serengeti, is set to open in May. Ideal for families or groups of friends, this one-of-a-kind property celebrates Africa's creative energy and excellence with locally sourced design elements and décor throughout.

Singita Milele can accommodate up to 10 guests in five individually designed suites named after the collective nouns for Tanzania's most iconic species – honoring giraffe, lion, cheetah, zebra and rhino. The spacious suites all include large outdoor terraces and decks, dressing rooms, outdoor showers, private Jacuzzis and sweeping views over the savannah below.

Milele comes complete with a full staff, including private guides and game-viewing vehicles for exploring the 350,000-acre Grumeti reserve. Additional personalized offerings include wellness treatments, a fully equipped private fitness center, and an intimate 10-person movie room. There are also fully stocked bar/deli refrigerators with freshly made delicacies offered throughout the day, as well as private fine dining.

The all-new Desert Rhino Camp

Set in a valley in Damaraland's expansive Palmwag Concession, Desert Rhino Camp began as a research base for Save the Rhino Trust Namibia (SRT). Now a thriving partnership between local communities, SRT and Wilderness Safaris, trackers patrol and protect one of Africa's most precious populations of desert-adapted black rhino.

Built in 2003, Desert Rhino Camp has been an enduring favorite– famed for the passion and energy of its staff as well as its meaningful guest experience. The reconstructed DRC will elevate the in-camp safari experience in this unique, vast Namib Desert landscape. Its spectacular new design will blend as seamlessly as possible into its landscape and environment, telling the unique story of the rhino, while in every way enhancing guest comfort and experience. Guests wishing to explore the area during Desert Rhino Camp's closure can stay at Damaraland Camp, from where rhino tracking on foot is also offered.

Serengeti Explorer Camp

Serengeti Explorer Camp, set to open mid-2024, is a luxury safari camp located in the Serengeti National Park in Tanzania. It offers a unique and immersive experience for visitors looking to explore the park's landscapes and wildlife.

The camp is designed in a minimalistic fashion, with geometrical shaped columns that repeat throughout the project to support a lightweight cantilevered roof that filters the sunlight. Balconies are integrated into the rooms, so that they become an extension of the space, with fully retracting windows. Internal furnishings are unique and custom designed using earthy colors and textures. Common areas, comprised separate blocks, include a dining area, bar and sitting room. These are also fully open to nature, surrounded by large outdoor decks, making the transition between indoor spaces and the spectacular views unobstructed. The lower level includes the gym, infinity pool, and a pool bar, set on the edge of the bushveld.

Activities at the Serengeti Explorer Camp feature game drives, where visitors have the opportunity to witness the incredible wildlife migrations that the Serengeti is famous for. The camp also offers guided walks, allowing guests to experience the natural environment on foot and learn more about the flora and fauna of the region.
