Hoanib Skeleton Coast Camp - Greening the Desert!

The first guests have been booked and the much-anticipated Hoanib Skeleton Coast Camp will be ready for them in August. With construction underway, the sustainability coordinator for Wilderness Safaris undertook an adventurous 12 hour drive to the new camp site to ensure that the environmental footprint of the camp is as low as feasibly possible. To this end, the camp has been designed to be 100% solar powered for its energy and water needs. The design of its guest rooms takes into account natural lighting and air movement to maintain comfortable temperatures, with double layers of canvas throughout to improve insulation. Numerous septic tanks, evaporation and transpiration pits have been put in place to ensure that waste water can be utilized by plant life. Also, a carefully designed fuel storage area has been built to prevent any potential spillage of fuel or oil into the sensitive desert environment. In addition to being environmentally friendly, the new camp will also be comfortable and beautiful. Exclusivity is retained with only eight tented rooms, elegantly appointed with private shaded decks overlooking stunning, starkly magnificent scenery.
