August - Botswana, Zambia
This (lion-buffalo interaction)was an amazing sequence of events. We watched for about an hour one morning at Duba Plains as the restless lions were pacing around on one side of the scrub brush and low trees, a large herd of buffalos very nearby on the other side. Suddenly about 5 lions plunged through and brought down this straggler who was a bit separated from the group. He struggled mightily and we were sure he was a goner. A couple more lions came to help. One of the lions had his head in her jaws, and several had their jaws around his neck. Just as suddenly, the buffalo heaved himself up and escaped. A short while later we discovered the fortunate buffalo in hiding.
