Artist In Residence Collaboration - Tswalu Kalahari Reserve and Everard Read Gallery
Tswalu Kalahari Reserve is the largest private reserve in South Africa, and the Everard Read Gallery is the country’s oldest and most respected commercial gallery, so it makes perfect sense that they would create a partnership to benefit conservation and showcase top South African artists.
By invitation, an Artist in Residence will spend a few months at Tswalu Kalahari to focus his or her creative energy on producing a body of work with a sense of place, depicting the mesmerising beauty and ecological fragility of the southern Kalahari. The work is then displayed at the prestigous Everard Read Gallery, with a portion of the proceeds being donated to the Tswalu Foundation, which conducts important research and conservation work on the Tswalu Kalahari Reserve.
From February 2 to March 13th, the Everard Read Gallery will feature a solo exhibition by Gillian Condy, the most recent Artist in Residence, entitled “Tswalu: a New Beginning”. Born in Kenya, educated in Uganda, and trained at the Royal College of Art in London, Gillian was the resident botanical illustrator at the South African National Biodiversity Institute for nearly 35 years. “Tswalu: a New Beginning” depicts the incredible intricacy of the rare flora and fauna to be found on the Tswalu Kalahari Reserve – CLICK HERE for a digital catalog of the exhibition.
