Keep Calm and Carry On Conserving

4/1/2020

During these very challenging times around the world, it's reassuring to know that our partners in Africa are developing creative ways to continue doing the critical conservation work that local communities and wildlife rely on. In this edition of Classic Africa News we highlight some of the great projects that continue to operate under very difficult conditions.

Although the countries of "safari Africa" remain largely un-impacted by Covid-19 (South Africa is the only country with over 500 cases), the very stringent lockdown policies in all these countries has had a severe financial impact on their developing economies - there is, for example, no formal unemployment insurance in any of these countries. And so we highlight just a handful of the safari companies that have been able to retain their workers and continue their community projects.

With no safari vehicles out on game-drive, a significant deterrent to poaching has been removed, and commercial poachers are opportunistically moving into this void - we are unfortunately receiving reports of an increase in both rhino and elephant poaching. There is also a spike in snaring for bushmeat as tourism dollars no longer flow into rural villagers. Again, we shine a light on some of the great anti-poaching and conservation efforts that our partners across Africa are engaged in.

Africa and its people are resilient and they will weather this storm. Both southern and East Africa received great rains this year, and circumstances are perfect for wildlife to thrive. Everything is ready and waiting to flourish, as the world slowly and safely starts moving again. In this respect, we also wanted to express our enormous gratitude to 2020 clients who have been so patient and understanding as we wait to see when travel becomes possible, and reschedule where necessary.
