Mombo - Ahead of the Pack
The new Mombo Camp in the Okavango Delta, Botswana, opened on January 28th, a month earlier than anticipated!
The rebuilt camp is inspired by Mombo's tradition and history stretching back nearly 30 years, and celebrates one of Wilderness Safaris' greatest conservation successes - the reintroduction of black and white rhino into the wilds of Botswana.
The camp's location – in the Mombo Concession on the northern tip of Chief's Island within the Moremi Game Reserve – is considered one of the best areas for wildlife in Africa. The concession boasts enormous concentrations of plains game and predators, and is teeming with game year round.
The nine large tented suites (including a family room) are elevated above the ground, so that uninterrupted views can be enjoyed from the veranda and pergola. Each tent has been built in exactly the same place as its predecessor – with a slight increase in size toward the floodplain to facilitate a pool deck with a private plunge pool. The interior includes a sitting room, separate bedroom and bathroom, indoor and outdoor showers and a sumptuous bathtub, all fashioned in the spirit of responsible luxury.
"In short, the new Mombo is a show stopper," commented lead interior designer, Caline Williams-Wynn. "As the Rolls Royce of the Delta, we have combined traditional and vintage elements with a modern elegance that truly embraces the real essence of Mombo. We have used deconstructed furniture in classic styles, antique brass finishings, vintage leathers, copper lighting and copper-cladded fire places combined with marble and natural oak floors."
Per Kim Nixon, Managing Director of Wilderness Safaris Botswana: "We are proud of the progress we have made to date and look forward to sharing the magic of Mombo with our guests in 2018 – We have no doubt that Mombo will continue to exceed our guests' expectations and remain a place of harmony: a balance between the camps, the environment and the people who stay here."
