On the Horizon.... Bisate Lodge

11/10/2016

Bisate Lodge, located next to Rwanda's Volcanoes National Park, is set to open its doors on June 1st, 2017. Offering a luxurious base from which to enjoy an extraordinary gorilla conservation experience, Bisate will also have a far-reaching impact on the ecosystem of the Virunga Massif and the rural people living adjacent to it.

Set within the amphitheater of an eroded volcanic cone, the 67-acre Bisate site offers sweeping views towards the Karisimbi, Bisoke and Mikeno volcanoes. It is close enough to the Volcanoes National Park Headquarters to be convenient for guests' early morning gorilla treks, but far enough removed to ensure complete privacy and exclusivity.

Each of the six luxurious forest villas  include a bedroom, spacious living area and bathroom, all warmed by a central fireplace - and with breathtaking views from a private deck. The lodge's sophisticated architectural and interior design is rooted in Rwandan building tradition and culture, with spherical structures, finely woven textiles, and innovative sculptural details.

Bisate encourages each guest to participate in the lodge's biodiversity conservation efforts, as well as engage and meet the local community. Aside from tracking one of the seven habituated gorilla groups, other attractions include visits to the Iby'wacu cultural village, the Twin Lakes of Buhondo and Burera, the lava tunnels of the Musanze Caves, Dian Fossey's grave, and viewing the endemic golden monkey. Walks on Bistate's extensive property offer birding and participation in the lodge's ambitious reforestation program.

Stay tuned as Pierre plans to visit Bisate in the near future and will offer his first hand experiences from this special part of the world.
