World Rhino Day

World Rhino Day - Conservation Southern Africa

A global march for Rhinos took place in October to call for an end to poaching and a ban on the rhino horn trade. Statistics show that a rhino is slaughtered once every 9-11 hours for its horn. Global awareness is key to conserving these iconic African animals. According to the Behjane Trust, Zimbabwe, “if we are unable to stop the current exponential increase in rhino poaching, by the year 2021, just seven short years away, we will be lamenting the global extinction of rhino in the wild.” Fortunately, resources to save the rhino are increasing signicantly, with the biggest conservation donation ever made in the name of protecting a single species coming from philanthropist Howard Buffet.

World Rhino Day - Wildlife Conservation in Southern AfricaNations from around the world have become involved, with the Dutch lottery and the Swedish government contributing to the Peace Parks Foundation's effort to create trans–boundary parks. Further, the Behjane Trust has partnered with Great Plains Conservation to re-locate 100 rhino from South Africa to the safety of Botswana. The provision of equipment and the training of local anti-poaching units are also gaining momentum on the ground. Rallies and celebrations for threatened species are an effective tool for raising awareness, but they are also a call to action for each and every one of us to make a difference. Biking with a Purpose – 2014 Nedbank Tour de Tuli

Biking with a Purpose - Community Support in Southern AfricaThe Nedbank Tour de Tuli gave 340 cyclists the opportunity to pedal through 155 miles of some of Africa’s most remote and beautiful areas in Botswana, Zimbabwe and South Africa, to support the Children in the Wilderness Foundation. Starting at the Pont Drift border between South African and Botswana, cyclists rode for two days, exploring the Northern Tuli Game Reserve via ancient elephant trails. From here, they crossed the Shashe River and entered Zimbabwe’s Tuli Circle with a further two days spent cycling through communal areas and expansive bushveld. The final day saw riders cross the Limpopo River into South Africa’s Mapungubwe National Park and over the finish line. The cycle tour also raises awareness of the importance of Transfrontier Conservation Areas and serves as a catalyst for wilderness preservation. If you are a cycling enthusiast the Tour de Tuli is a great way to combine active adventure, philanthropy and safari in one trip! For more information, please contact us.
