Mombo Camp, Botswana, Switches to 100% Renewable Energy
In March Mombo Camp officially made the switch from diesel-powered generators to renewable solar energy. According to Group Sustainability Director, Derek de la Harpe, "Wilderness will not build another camp without incorporating a major element of renewable energy. At the same time we have embarked on an ambitious retrofitting process to make Xigera, Kalahari Plains, Banoka Bush Camp and Zarafa 100% solar powered. Over the course of 2012 we anticipate completing this process for at least another three camps, the rebuilt DumaTau among them."
Wolwedans, Namibia, Launches a Solar-hybrid Power Station
In February Wolwedans launched a solar hybrid energy system, which is slated to reduce the camp's fossil fuel consumption by 65% - a precedent-setting initiative for the local hospitality industry in Namibia. Wolwedans was founded on the principle of responsible tourism, which is designed to provide the financial means to support and uphold the conservation of the ecologically unique NamibRand Nature Reserve. In the words of Stephan Brückner, founder of Wolwedans: "We are in it for the long run. We feel that although the implementation of responsible tourism comes at a price, the rewards far outweigh the input costs."
