Alexander McCall Smith's worldwide hit series of novels, the first of which was titled "The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency", has been adapted for television as a series that replaces "The Sopranos".

The two-hour pilot, directed by the late Anthony Minghella, premiered on Sunday 29 March 2009 on HBO and will be followed each Sunday during prime time (check local listings) for the next six weeks by a weekly installment of Mma Ramotswe's adventures.

The "larger than life" Precious Ramotswe, fictional owner of Botswana's only female-owned detective agency, is played by Grammy Award-winner Jill Scott.
