Foreword
The two huge elephants
slowly moved to within an arm's-length of James, our tracker, who was sitting
on the front fender. At last Solly, our ranger, started the engine and revved
it menacingly. Realizing we wouldn't back down, the elephants moved off, ending
one of many fascinating and exhilarating safari experiences. Memorable
encounters, with people, wildlife and the land, keep Debby and me returning to
Africa.
The photographs in
this book were taken during our visit to Southern Africa in March 2007. The
book is divided into two parts. Part I deals with our week-long drive in a
rental car from Cape Town to Plettenberg Bay along the Garden Route and with
our visit to two Zulu homesteads in Zulu communities near Hluluwe during our
stay at Phinda.
Part II is all about
safari. The emphasis is on the varied wildlife we observed in four game
reserves: Phinda and Djuma in South Africa, and Chitabe and Vumbura Plains in
Botswana's Okavango Delta. I have also included some images of the wonderful
African scenery and safari camps to convey the pleasures of safari life. I hope
you enjoy the photos as much as I enjoyed taking them.

"Umama Gumede is a Sangoma, a
Zulu fortune teller and holistic healer. We were privileged to witness an
Igobongo, a ritualistic program that Sangomas perform daily. She lit a small
fire and prepared a foaming potion. She then entered a trance-like state. After
a short time she told my fortune. Some of her observations were remarkably
accurate." |
