Rwanda's Kwita Izina Ceremony
10/31/2023
Twenty-three baby mountain gorillas born over the last twelve months were named during the 19th annual Kwita Izina gorilla naming ceremony on September 1st, near Volcanoes National Park. Kwita Izina is modelled off a centuries old tradition in which Rwandans name their children in the presence of family and friends. Since 2005, 374 baby gorillas have been named and continue to be monitored and protected. Watch a report from the ceremony here: |
