East Africa's First All-Female Anti-Poaching Unit

1/1/2020

The 50,000-acre Segera Conservancy in the heart of Kenya's Laikipia region recently launched the first-ever all-female anti-poaching unit in East Africa.

The 12 Maasai women in the unit received six months of intensive training at the Zeitz Foundation's new training academy and have been supplied with the necessary equipment and ongoing support required to be on the front line of Kenya conservation.

"It has been a long-standing mission of the Zeitz Foundation to create initiatives that enhance the livelihoods of local communities, empower women, and conserve nature," said founder Jochen Zeitz. "We are proud to be supporting this ground-breaking venture that will improve women's lives and support conservation in Kenya."

Segera Retreat enjoys a dramatic setting on the conservancy - with Mount Kenya to the east and the Great Rift Valley to the west - surrounded by golden savannah plains, rocky waterfalls and tropical botanical gardens.  This exclusive lodge is hallmarked by understated elegance and quiet authenticity, with its heritage buildings, zen-like courtyard and objet trouvé personalizing the interiors. Guests at Segera may have the opportunity to meet East Africa's ground-breaking anti-poaching unit and learn about the Maasai women's motivation, training and experiences first-hand.
