Beho Beho

Beho Beho, meaning "cool breeze" was the first permanent camp in the Selous Game Reserve and, true to its name, it is also the most comfortable. Sited in the highlands overlooking the Rufiji River Valley, Beho Beho is an exclusive and luxurious "bush home" with a secluded and strategic setting.

With sweeping views of savanna grasslands and wooded hillsides, and in close proximity to permanent (hippo filled) watering holes, Beho Beho enjoys virtually exclusive access to one of the most diverse regions within the northern Selous. Wildlife moves freely around and through camp, with large numbers of plains game and excellent predator representation. Nearby features include Lake Tagalala, the Selous's famous hot springs, and the grave of adventurer Frederick Courney Selous (after whom the Reserve is named).

Guests at Beho Beho have the opportunity to explore the wildlife and beauty of Africa's largest reserve via game-drives in open safari vehicles, boating excursions on Lake Tagalala, and guided walking safaris (a highlight!). More adventurous spirits can "sleep out" under the stars in the elevated treehouse. In keeping with Beho Beho's unique "house party" approach to hospitality, guides rotate between guests so that everyone enjoys at least one activity with each guide, which makes for fascinating dinner conversation (overlooking the camp's floodlit watering hole).

Beho Beho can be described as more of a bush home than a camp. It Is comprised of eight individual bandas, or stone built, palm-leaf thatched cottages, flanking either side of the main house. The bandas are spacious and airy, totally open to the front, overlooking a wild, unspoiled wilderness to the far horizon. Each features large comfortable chairs, a mosquito draped bed, a Zanzibari day bed to while away siesta time, a proper colonial writing bureau, ‘Persian’ carpets and even a tripod mounted telescope for private game spotting. A separate dressing room leads into a fully equipped bathroom with twin wash hand basins, loo. and an open-air shower stocked with luxurious toiletries.

The expansive main lodge features comfortably elegant sitting areas in British colonial style, complete with a full-sized snooker table. To one side is a small library and museum containing artifacts from the WW1 skirmishes which took place at the bottom of the hill from camp. There is a main dining room serving inspired cuisine and an impressive pool area. Just beyond the main lodge is an exclusive annex known as Bailey's Banda, which functions completely independently with dedicated staff, its own kitchen (complete with chef) and private safari vehicle. For the more adventurous there is the Beho Beho Treehouse, a luxurious sleepout venue, perched alongside and within a giant ancient leadwood tree overlooking a dry river bed.

Beho Beho stands out in the Selous for its luxury, elevated and secluded location, and stimulating social atmosphere, making it a true safari connoisseurs destination. First-time safari travelers will appreciate the abundant wildlife, elegant accommodations, and convivial dinners; safari veterans will love the privacy, the walking safaris, and the engaging conversations with guides and like-minded Africa officianados who are drawn to this quirky icon of the Selous.
