Healthy Dining in South Africa's Cape

1/31/2018

Quinoa, matcha, chia seeds, tumeric, bone broth, berries of all kinds, sushi doughnuts, vegan ice cream, and champagne popsicles. While eating trends come and go in Cape Town, it's fun to experiment with the latest in health nirvana. This year, we're anticipating more bowl-based foods, such as the increasingly popular Poké Bowl, to appear on menus, along with plant-based eating and nose-to-tail dining. Bone broths and fermented foods, designed to improve gut health, are also on the radar with exciting new spots serving reviving elixirs packed with nutrients.

Poké Bowls. Pronounced POH-kay, have been all the rage lately. This dish is a centuries-old Hawaiian street food inspired combination of (usually) raw fish, soy sauce, sesame oil, zesty toppings and crunchy garnishes – perfect for sunny days, sushi-lovers and the health conscious. Say aloha to the Poké at: Hokey Poké, Three Wise Monkeys, and Manga Restaurant.

Being vegetarian in the Mother City has never been easier and the meat and dairy won't be missed by even the most committed carnivore.

The 100% vegan Hungry Herbivore bridges the gap between comfort food and healthy, plant-based nutritious fare. Offerings include nachos, vegan mozzarella pizzas and creamy cashew and garlic sauce spaghetti alfredo. The Harvest Café and Deli delivers an array of tasty and original dishes such as sourdough toast with avocado roses and dukkah spice. Spirit Café offers a legendary lunch where one can choose the Bowl of the Day and munch on a portion of all four of the daily salads such as sorghum with dukkah carrots, turmeric slaw, coconut spinach and Thai quinoa with ginger and peanut dressing. Scheckter's RAW is possibly the most health-conscious  option of all, but the abundant Buddha bowls and decadent gluten and sugar-free desserts, such as the 'Twix Bar' with crushed nuts and a gooey, caramel center prove that virtuous can be delicious.

Just because beef has been swapped for leaf, doesn't preclude the enjoyment of a juicy burger. Royale Eatery on Long Street is one of Cape Town's best-loved burger joints and serves a legendary vegan cheeseburger with a homemade soy patty and freshly made tomato relish. Tasha's is a perennial favorite that offers generously portioned sandwiches and well-loved salads, which include quinoa and beet, heirloom tomato, a chopped house salad with avocado and nuts, a charred butternut plate and a delicious Texas salad with a lime dressing. Raw and Roxy is home to an exceptional raw zucchini lasagna (think layers of cashew cheese, pesto and walnut mince and garlicky arrabiata sauce), veggie burgers with portobello mushrooms, cauliflower-based raw pizza and superfood salads. As for sweet endings, Beatrice specializes in memorable cashew nut milk and avocado ice-creams, as well as a berry 'cheesecake' that will convert anyone to the pleasures of plant-forward eating.

Enjoy Cape Town's culinary scene from the Cape Grace Hotel, the Silo, or the Cape Cadogan.
