Remote Africa's Positive Impact

8/4/2010

Remote Africa Safaris operates Tafika, Chikoko Trails and Mwaleshi camps in the Luangwa Valley, Zambia. The camps are renowned for their experienced wildlife guides and excellent game viewing, as well as their ecologically sound camp-management practices and support for education within the local community.

Through the Tafika Fund, created to coordinate donations from guests and other partners, support is given the nearby school at Mkasanga Village. The Fund provides such educational necessities as text books, stationery, teachers' salaries, and pupils' scholarships.

Luxury Southern African Safaris - Community and ConservationThe fund has also enabled residents of Mkasanga to build an outpatient clinic in the village, funding medicines as well as medical staff. There are plans to extend the facility to include inpatient services and a maternity wing. Waste disposal is carefully managed at all camps to leave no trace of human presence. Waste from the outlying camps is portaged to Tafika for sorting - all non-biodegradable waste is packaged and sent to the city of Lusaka for proper disposal. Paper is distributed to the boilers for hot water at the camps; and biodegradable waste is used to make compost for the vegetable garden.

Remote Africa Safaris also actively supports the anti-poaching work of the North Luangwa Conservation Project. John Coppinger, co-owner of Remote Africa Safaris, has personally flown hundreds of microlight hours on anti-poaching surveillance, and the Tafika Fund has financed communications technology and transportation for anti-poaching units.
