Lodge Developments

CHIAWA CAMP, ZAMBIA

The photo of Chiawa's vehicles fording the Chongwe river into the Park in early April illustrates some of the challenges Chiawa faced as it underwent renovation with unusually high rainfall this year. Despite the difficulties, the new lodge opened on time and is thriving. This year Chiawa's guiding team was voted as the "Best in Africa" in the inaugural Good Safari Guide awards. Chiawa Camp was also among the final 8 camps selected for Best Camp in Southern Africa.

TOKA LEYA, ZAMBIA

Toka Leya proudly opened its doors in May. The main lounge, dining area and pool of the camp are shaded by jackalberry and waterberry trees and overlook the majestic Zambezi River just seven miles upstream from the Victoria Falls. The camp's 12 en-suite tents (including 3 family tents) extend on both sides of the main area and are linked by raised wooden walkways. Situated in the western sector of the Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park elephant, hippo and other large mammal species move through camp and activities include boat cruises, game drives and visits to the Falls.

LITTLE MAKALOLO, ZIMBABWE

Little Makalolo camp in south-eastern Hwange National Park has been completely rebuilt and the large false mopane tree in the center of the camp now shades a separate dining and living area as well as a raised platform overlooking the busy waterhole and famous log-pile hide. Even the newly reintroduced white rhino have been seen at the waterhole recently! The new, more spacious tents feature solar powered electricity and water heaters, and are nestled in the tree line on the edge of the narrow plain in front of camp.

ONGAVA TENTED CAMP, NAMIBIA

Ongava Tented Camp has revamped its 8 tents. The new tented units are larger and are raised onto low wooden decks to match the main area, which was rebuilt in 2007. As always, Wilderness Safaris has been as environmentally conscious as possible and wherever possible wooden decking is comprised of Prosopis, an alien invasive plant that has impacted on both biodiversity and productivity in Namibia.

WOLWEDANS, NAMIBIA

Situated south of Wolwedans Main Camp and hugged by massive granite rocks, Boulders Camp is the latest addition to the Wolwedans Collection. Sleeping a maximum of eight guests in four spacious tents, Boulders is the most exclusive camp on the Reserve. The main area consists of a dining and lounge tent, a breakfast deck and open fire place. Close by is a memorable "sundowner" spot overlooking the vast majestic landscape. From Boulders Camp one can comfortably explore the deep south of the NamibRand Nature Reserve.

KING'S POOL CAMP, BOTSWANA

In the Linyanti Concession, the main area of Kings Pool Camp has been completely revamped. The camp has evolved several times since the King of Sweden first pitched his royal tent here all those decades ago. The new design maximizes a "sense of place" and the dramatic vista onto the Linyanti floodplain. It is centered around a custom-made wooden bar and features cool, clean lines that create a sanctuary from the sometimes harsh conditions in this very large concession.
