New Beginnings

2/1/2021

While the world has been shut down due to Covid-19 camp and lodge owners in safari Africa have been busy creating and renovating properties in anticipation of your return.

 Facelift for Ol Donyo Lodge

Ol Donyo, set on the 275,000-acre Mbirikani Group Ranch bordering Chyulu Hills National Park in southeastern Kenya, has been completely refurbished. Owned by 4,000 Maasai, it is redolent with rich cultural influences, blended seamlessly with contemporary design. Floors have been repainted, a new kitchen has been built, and staff is refreshed and ready to welcome guests.

The lodge has been created so that each suite has its own window overlooking the rolling plains to Mount Kilimanjaro, "the soul of East Africa." In addition, all six suites plus a family suite have stunning star beds, for sleeping out under the canopy of stars surrounded by the calls of hyenas and lions.

This is a camp that embraces community and guides are delighted to introduce guests to their village for an authentic cultural experience. Other activities include walking, cycling, horse riding, and game-drives through the conservancy. Return to Relais and Chateaux quality meals, paired with curated wines from the extensive cellar, served by talented Executive Chef Patrick, and his team.

 Xigera Safari Lodge Unveiled

As one of the most established safari concessions in the Okavango Delta, we're pleased to report that Xigera has reopened as a bold new expression of luxury-in-the-wilderness.

Now called Xigera Safari Lodge, the property features just 12 stylish and luxurious suites, each boasting nearly 2,000 square feet of living space. Lodge facilities include an air-conditioned gym, spa, library, and 30 foot sculptural tree-house, where guests can enjoy an adventurous sleep-out under the stars. Every surface and object has been hand-crafted, and the lodge is adorned by an impressive collection of contemporary African art.

Wellness is a priority, with African-inspired cuisine and regenerative spa treatments that complement the healing powers of the natural setting. An "Anything, Anytime" approach to dining allows guests to fully unwind and soak up the magic of safari, while a 5:1 staff-to-guest ratio ensures complete flexibility and attention to detail.

Of course safari is what it's all about, and Xigera's 11,000 acre private concession inside the Moremi Game Reserve ensures guests an exclusive and wildlife-rich experience. With an enviable balance between islands and waterways, Xigera offers both land and water activities (flood levels permitting), including game drives, walking safaris, boating, and mekoro excursions in unique glass-bottomed dugout canoes.

 Singita Sabora Camp Reopens

Singita Sabora Tented Camp, one of Tanzania's most iconic tented safari camps, recently reopened with extensive refurbishments and an entirely new aesthetic.

The reimagined camp retains the quintessential elements of a romantic safari under canvas, but the sophisticated redesign draws on contemporary African cultural identity, with a muted palette and earthy textures inspired by the surrounding Serengeti grasslands.

Space for restoration abounds, with each of the nine tented suites boasting a private deck and outdoor sala with daybed, as well as a large soaking tub, all overlooking the endless Serengeti savanna. A fitness center, swimming pool, in-room spa treatments, and farm-to-table dining complete the sense of wellness.

Of course, the camp continues to offer some of the best wildlife viewing in Tanzania, with all the exclusivity advantages of being located on the country's premier private game reserve.

 Little Kulala Reopens

With an enviable location adjacent to the giant Mars-red dunes of Sossusvlei, and a private entrance into the Park, Little Kulala is one of Namibia's most sought-after lodges. The latest iteration of the lodge includes refurbishments that improve the guest experience and reduce environmental impact. The lodge's energy needs are now met 100% by solar energy coupled with a sophisticated inverter system, and raised walkways connect the main lodge with each guest chalet, further reducing the lodge's footprint.

Each air-conditioned chalet now boasts even more space, with a rooftop patio for private dining, and an expansive deck with plunge pool and shaded daybed that can be rolled out for sleeping under the stars. A cool, sophisticated décor predominates, with greys and muted pinks celebrating the palette of the surrounding Namib Desert.

As the world slowly starts to heal itself from the ravages of the pandemic in the coming year, wellness, rejuvenation, and balance are emerging as key elements of the safari experience across Africa. Little Kulala's chefs have created a new menu focused on farm to table dining and indigenous ingredients, and the Little Kulala Spa has developed a range of treatment options based on the local Tsamma Melon.

Of course, the primary reason to stay at Little Kulala is to see and explore the spectacular beauty of the oldest desert on earth, and the lodge continues to offer a range of immersive activities to accomplish this, including nature drives into Sossusvlei and Deadvlei with the opportunity to climb some of the world's highest dunes, hot air ballooning, and hiking, mountain-biking, and quad-biking on the Kulala Private Reserve.

Tembo Plains

Construction of Great Plains Conservation's newest camp in Zimbabwe, Tembo Plains, has begun and is on track to open in June 2021. It is located on the private 300,000 acre Sapi Reserve, which, together with the neighboring Mana Pools National Park, comprises over 800,000 acres of prime wilderness.

The design will pay homage to the ancient indigenous culture, influenced by the ruins of the 11th century Great Zimbabwe, featuring impressive stacked stones in circular towers and columns. The tented interiors will also celebrate the age of colonial exploration, with gleaming campaign furniture, polished brass and leather. A color theme of blues will flow throughout the décor to complement the wide Zambezi River that runs in front of camp, creatively bringing disparate cultures and nature together in one space.

Tembo Plains is the perfect base from which to explore the spectacular Zambezi Valley. Activities include professionally guided wildlife viewing from open safari vehicles (day and night), as well as walking safaris, boating excursions, and canoeing. Stay tuned for more information as building progresses.
