Great Plains' Anti-Poaching Efforts - Project Ranger

7/1/2020

In June, the conservation world was shocked by the sad news that Rafiki, a legendary 25 year-old giant silverback gorilla who had led a group of seventeen gorillas in Uganda's Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park since 2008, was lost to poaching.

Rafiki was killed by a spear and four poachers were arrested in connection with the incident. The last recorded poaching of a mountain gorilla was in June 2011, according to the International Gorilla Conservation Program.

While tourism has fallen due to the coronavirus pandemic, the poaching pandemic has escalated, with elephants and rhinos being particularly targeted. The loss of tourism has had a disastrous impact on the survival of communities and the conservation of wildlife. In response, Project Ranger was initiated by the Great Plains Foundation to support wildlife protectors at the front line. The program is supplying food, salaries, and equipment to those front line rangers and their families, but it is not enough.

Great Plains has donated $250,000 to ranger support and will offer a matching funding program. For each dollar received from the tourism industry they will add a matching dollar. If you wish to make a donation, you may do so here.

To gain insight into the program, watch the Joubert's new short film Voices from Rangers.
