Home Skincare with Spa Manager Tanya Lopes

4/1/2020

The spa manager at The Saxon Hotel in Johannesburg, Tanya Lopes, has shared some of her best skincare tips for looking after our complexions during quarantine.

"As we try and to put some sort normality into our lives why not take the opportunity to spend some time on yourself and also use the opportunity to get your family involved as well as educating them in how to look after their skin.  Your skin will be going through some changes with the change of season as well as the additional stresses you may be feeling at the moment," writes Tanya.

These tips include following a good skincare routine and enjoying a mini facial weekly. This will help your skin retain elasticity and keep hydration levels up, which is also paramount to assist in anti-aging. Your daily skincare routine should involve cleansing, toning, application of eye cream, application of a day serum and finally application of a day cream.

Even though ladies may not be wearing makeup while at home it is still essential to follow a daily skincare routine to retain the PH levels of your skin and its ability to self-regulate and heal.

It is recommended that you don't use the same skin care brand for more than 6 months as your skin will develop immunity to the active ingredients and results will slow.  Try to find at least two lines you like and alternate them.

Here is Tanya's DIY Mini-Facial:

  1. Cleanse your skin with your preferred cleanser. Generally it is recommended that if you have a dryer skin you should use a cream based cleanser, and those with more oily or combination skin should use a cleansing wash. If possible, use a more gentle cleanser that is formulated specifically for your eye area as the skin is more delicate.

  2. Tone the skin using cotton pads. Toning returns your skins PH to its normal level so that the products you then apply in the next steps are not altered in their effectiveness.

  3. Exfoliate the skin. There are granular and enzymatic based exfoliants available. If you have a more sensitive skin avoid enzymatic exfoliators as they may cause a reaction. Enzymatic based exfoliators work as a mild peeling system, which is great for tired skins or more oily problematic skin types. Remove the chosen exfoliator with facial sponges.

  4. Tone the skin again using the cotton pads. This removes all remaining residue of the exfoliator and prepares the skin to receive additional nutrients from the next step.

  5. Apply Serum. A serum works as a booster to help treat whatever skin concerns you may be focusing on during a course of treatment. Tanya finds that at this time of year skin may appear dull and dehydrated, so would recommend a serum based on a vitamin boost and hydration. Combination serums can be used.

  6. Apply a face mask. The right type of mask for you will be based on how much time you have to sit and relax. There are masks that one can simply apply and they penetrate the skin, which is great for those short of time. Otherwise, Tanya suggests doing all the mini-facial steps while running your shower or bath. Once you have applied your mask get in the shower or bath and remove it just before it is time to get out. Charcoal masks are good for problematic skins and collagen or hydration masks will help with dehydration and general skin elasticity and dullness.

  7. Apply eye and face cream. Should you do your facial in the day then apply your chosen eye and day cream. If you do your facial at night then use your night care products.
