Turtle Conservation in Kenya
At AfroChic Diani Beach, Kenya, last season saw an impressive 830 turtles hatch from seven nests and this season will surpass that with nine nests holding 1084 eggs, of which 599 have already hatched. Diani Turtle Watch, a group of volunteers, has been working to protect nesting turtles and their eggs. Development and construction along the coast has led to unsafe conditions for female turtles to lay their eggs in certain areas. Thus, a team is always on hand to carefully relocate nests to safer areas and ensure that the eggs have the best chance of hatching and hatchlings have a higher chance of making it to the ocean unharmed. The Turtle Watch team also collects valuable data by exhuming the nests and recording the number of empty shells, undeveloped eggs or hatchlings at various stages of development, helping to determine the success rate of each nest and eventually a wider picture of nesting activities and success rates in Kenya.

Desert-Adapted Lions
A new nomadic male lion has taken up residence on the Skeleton Coast in Namibia. Since the demise of the Five Musketeers – stars of the 2015 Vanishing Kings documentary – the Hoanib Pride and two female pairs have been without a dominant male. The male was recently sighted mating with one of the females... and so, if all goes well, there should be new life in the desert soon! Visit this spectacular landscape and search for rare desert-adapted wildlife at Hoanib Skeleton Coast Camp.

Children in the Wilderness Updates
Through Children in the Wilderness's partnership with the Bourke Family Foundation, approximately 700 solar-powered lights have been distributed across the Hwange and Tsholotsho Communities in Zimbabwe in 2019. Recipients include teachers at each school and nurses at local clinics.

This year's Children in the Wilderness' annual fundraiser, the Nedbank Tour de Tuli, was a roaring success! Nearly 300 cyclists pedaled 170 miles through the beautiful Tuli region, crossing informal border posts under magnificent trees in dry river beds between Botswana, South Africa and Zimbabwe – contributing to making a difference in the lives of Africa's children.
