Giraffe Conservation in Northwest Namibia
Natural Selections has partnered with the Giraffe Conservation Foundation (GCF) at the recently opened Hoanib Valley Camp in Namibia to research the endangered desert-adapted giraffe and its steadily declining population.  The animals are being monitored and their social dynamics recorded. Guides and guests assist GCF with data collection while exploring the survival strategies of this rare Angolan subspecies.

Nairobi Nursery
A tiny orphaned white rhino, Maarifa, arrived at the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust in Nairobi, Kenya, and is impressing staff with her huge personality. Now two months old, she spends her days playing and charging about for hours, barreling past her keepers and the resident wild warthogs and impala herds before eventually running out of steam and falling into a heap to rest. Stories from the nursery herd can be read in the Keepers' Diaries here.

Plastic Redux
Since 2012, Wilderness Safaris has made a concerted effort to reduce the number of plastic water bottles used in its camps and has achieved a total reduction of 76% thus far by offering guests plastic and steel reusable bottles to fill with fresh filtered water, as needed. In a bid to further reduce the usage of plastics a glass bottle policy was introduced last year in Botswana, Namibia and Zambia. The bottles are insulated and have been specially designed with a wide spout to accommodate ice. Filled bottles are available to guests in camp and on all activities and transfers.

Similarly, the Elewana Collection has made considerable efforts to reduce its carbon footprint and in the last couple of years has made great strides in reducing single use plastic. Its "ban the bottle" initiative eliminated the company's use of plastic water bottles, and then at the beginning of this year, Elewana was the first property group in East Africa to eliminate the use of plastic straws, effectively replacing them with biodegradable plastic versions.
