Tribe vs. Pride, and the Maasai Olympics

Great Plains Conservation's Dereck and Beverly Joubert's latest film, Tribe vs. Pride, was shown on National Geographic channels on 10 August - "World Lion Day" - during "Big Cat Week." This inspirational film was shot in and around the Maasai land surrounding Ol Donyo Lodge in southern Kenya. The area is also home to the biennial Maasai Olympics, a competition created to replace the coming-of-age tradition of hunting lions to become a warrior for the Maasai people. The next Maasai Olympics will occur on 15 December 2018, and guests staying at Ol Donyo Lodge during this period will be offered exclusive access to the event.

Getting SMART at Loisaba

The Rangers at Loisaba Conservancy in Kenya  conduct over 2,000 patrols each year, walking an average 1,100 miles per month and recording roughly 6,026 different wildlife sightings and data on threats, such as poachers' snares. These statistics are possible as a result of the SMART system that was launched last year with the Zoological Society of London. SMART uses technology to allow a continuous flow of information from the rangers "on the ground" to Loisaba's management, so that effective timely conservation decisions can be made. Guests to the Loisaba region can stay at the stylish and elegant Loisaba Tented Camp.

Tour di Tuli

Thanks to the funds raised by the annual Tour de Tuli mountain bike event, which took place this August in the Greater Mapungubwe Transfrontier Conservation Area (GMTFCA), South Africa, Children in the Wilderness (CITW) has been able to host over 6,000 children on its annual Camp Program, and 11,000 children through its Eco-Club Program. This year, 280 cyclists braved sandy tracks, hills, valleys and wildlife for this noble cause, raising funds for the camps, as well as a scholarship program (which saw 450 students through school last year), and an Eco-Mentor training program for teachers.
