Summer in the Mara

January, February and March are favorite months in Kenya's Maasai Mara, and with good reason.

January is considered the peak of summer in East Africa - the days are warm, the grass is short and the predators are on show. Likewise, with all the migratory birds in residence, the birding is superb.

February is known for its elephant sightings and one group of February guests at Little Governor's Camp was incredibly privileged to witness the birth of a baby elephant. Zebras and wildebeest from the Loita plains begin to arrive in the Maasai Mara at this time, as well.
 

March is a quiet month, and guests often have the whole of the Mara to themselves. As the first drops of rain fall the savannah bursts into life -  wild flowers bloom on the plains, the warburgia trees fruit in the forests drawing in elephants, monkeys and parrots, and with the backdrop of spectacular skies and open plains the photographic opportunities are exceptional.
