that two thousand years ago over one million lions roamed over Africa, the Middle East and even into Pakistan and India? By the 1940's roughly 450,000 could still be found throughout Africa. Today, it is estimated that less than 25,000 of these "big cats" survive. The significant reduction in numbers has been attributed to loss of habitat, prey decline, disease, the use of pesticides, poaching and hunting. Conservation and research agencies in the south Luangwa, Zambia, continue to monitor lion numbers. Click here to read about the latest initiative.
