For a true wilderness experience, there is nothing to beat a walking safari. Far away from the distracting sounds and smells of vehicles and boat engines, one feels less insulated by technology from the surroundings, and more attuned to the rhythms of the African bush. Classic African walking safaris feature something for everyone - from luxury permanent camps that offer walking as one of a number of activities, to a full ten day mobile walking safari.

The Mana Canoe and Walking Trail - Zimbabwe - 4 days / Three

The Mana Canoe Trail is an incredible journey through the heart of the Mana Pools area - a UNESCO World Heritage site by virtue of its beauty, wilderness, and biodiversity. This 4 day camping safari starts close to the western boundary of Mana Pools at Ruckomechi airfield and finishes at Chikwenya airfield; it operates from May through mid-November, and combines well with other safari destinations in southern Africa.

Robin Pope Mobile Walking Safari - Zambia - 9 or 11 days / Three and Five

Operated by the legendary Robin Pope Safaris, this is one of Africa's most famous walking safaris. Combining luxury tented camps with a fully serviced mobile walking safari, this 10 day safari runs June through October, and covers the highlights of the northern portion of Zambia's South Luangwa National Park.

Mwaleshi Camp - Zambia - 3 or more days / Four

A vintage safari camp in North Luangwa National Park, one of Africa's least known and most remote National Parks. Mwaleshi is one of only two safari camps in the entire park, which is virtually devoid of roads. A true wilderness walking experience.
