KAFUE'S RIVERS AND PLAINS
Kafue National Park is one of the largest Parks in Africa. At around 9,000 square miles it is a little larger than the state of New Jersey. This enormous and pristine wilderness area is home to an impressive variety of big game including lion, leopard, cheetah, elephant, buffalo and hippo. In addition, the Kafue conserves some fascinating species of special interest including Lichtenstein's hartebeest, sable, roan, puku, the diminutive oribi, and lechwe in their thousands. Boasting almost 500 recorded bird species, Kafue is truly a diverse African National Park and one of the last "wild frontiers". This excellent value for money safari focuses on three different areas and ecosystems within the Park, including the Kafue and Lunga Rivers and the vast Busanga Plains. A combination of charter flights and overland driving provides both a birds-eye view and an in-depth experience of the contrasting landscapes of the Kafue. All three camps are comfortable and stylish without being lavish, and feature rooms with private en-suite bathroom facilities and real beds. A maximum of eight guests are accommodated on this fully serviced safari, which is accompanied by an experienced professional guide. [ ITINERARY ] - [ DATES AND RATES 2008 ] - [ DATES AND RATES 2009 ] - [ CONTACT US ] Days 1, 2, and 3: Lufupa Camp, Kafue River Arrive early morning at Lusaka airport (or Livingstone Airport), where you are met by a representative of Sefofane Air Charters who will transfer you by light aircraft to Kafue National Park. Your private guide will meet you at the airstrip in Kafue and transfer the group to Lufupa Camp. This transfer is approximately one hour in duration, and en route we may encounter eland, roan and sable, among other species. Accommodation is in 6 large Meru-style tents with real beds and en-suite facilities. The dining and bar area are under huge Jackal berry trees, overlooking the Kafue River. Dinners are served in a traditional style boma under the stars, next to a lively camp fire, or in the tented dining room overlooking this impressive river. The Lufupa area is in the central northern sector of the vast Kafue National Park. The beauty of the park is evident in its diverse habitats with floodplains, miombo woodland, thick riverine vegetation and open grassy areas called dambos. There are resident prides of lion in the Lufupa area, and leopard are frequently seen. African painted wolves are occasionally sighted. Hippos are a permanent feature in front of camp, lazing in the cool waters of the Kafue River. Visitors can also expect to encounter a wide variety of plains game ranging from zebra, buffalo, roan, Lichtenstein's hartebeest, sable, kudu and impala to the diminutive oribi. Elephants are often encountered roaming through the concession. Activities include game drives, night drives, walking safaris, boating trips, and fishing. Days 4, 5, and 6: Musanza Tented Camp, Busanga Plains Depart Lufupa for an early morning game-drive transfer to Musanza Tented Camp. Musanza Tented Camp is located in the heart of the game-rich Busanga Plains in north-western Kafue. Accommodation consists of four well-appointed tents with expansive views of the spectacular wildlife that frequents the grassy plains. Each tent has an en suite bathroom with flush loo and bucket shower. The main dining and bar area are tented and situated under a majestic canopy of trees. The simple bush style of this camp ensures a traditional "camping" feel without sacrificing necessary comforts. ![]() The Busanga Plains are home to large herds (sometimes numbering in the thousands) of red lechwe and puku antelope. A wide range of other grazers also frequent the lush grass plains that characterize the Busanga from May through November. This abundance of prey species in turn attracts excellent concentrations of predators, with tree-climbing lions being one of the unique highlights of the area. There is also an excellent chance of seeing cheetah. Leopard and spotted hyena are sometimes also seen. Bird life is fantastic, with flocks of pelicans and crowned and wattled cranes being a particular strength. Day 7: Lunga River Lodge, Lunga River After an early breakfast, we transfer by road to Lunga River Lodge, enjoying our last shortened game drive on the Busanga Plains as we leave the area and re-enter the Miombo woodland. Located on a raised bank of the Lunga River and within lush riparian bush, each of Lunga River Lodge's six thatched roof chalets is stylishly furnished (with minimalist touches) and includes an en-suite shower, flush toilet and vanity basin. Lighting is by 12v lamps, candles and hurricane lanterns. The deep, clear Lunga River is the largest tributary of the Kafue River and flows north to south through a mosaic of Miombo woodland, riverine woodland and grassy dambos in the north-east of the Kafue National Park. Species like puku and impala are abundant while roan and Lichtenstein's hartebeest occur in lower densities. Viewing of buffalo herds and elephant bulls is good while lion and leopard are regularly encountered. Additional interesting species in the form of yellow baboons and tree hyrax occur in the vicinity of the camp while hippo abound in the Lunga River. Activities include game drives, night drives, walking safaris, guided canoe and boating trips, as well as fishing. Day 8: Safari ends in Lusaka or Livingstone Early morning light aircraft transfer from Lunga River Lodge to Lusaka Airport (or Livingstone Airport), where the safari ends.
