WHALE COAST PORTFOLIO

All six species of whales that occur in the southern hemisphere have been spotted off South Africa's Cape coast, and three of these are regular visitors: the Southern Right, the Humpback, and Bryde's Whales. Every year, between the months of June and December, the biggest and most spectacular of these, the Southern Right Whale, returns to sheltered bays along the southern coast of Africa to breed and give birth to their young. Prime spots for viewing these behemoths of the deep include False Bay, Walker Bay, and Plettenberg Bay. Of these, False Bay and Plettenberg Bay offer strictly controlled boat-based whale watching, while Walker Bay offers what is arguably the best land-based whale watching in the world, with Southern Rights often coming to within 50 feet of the shore.
