SERRA CAFEMA CAMP

Sunset over Serra Cafema

Serra Cafema Camp is located in the extreme north-west of Namibia and is one of the most remote safari camps in Africa. It is set in a wild and unspoiled landscape, as enchantingly beautiful as it is desolate and inhospitable. The area is many hundreds of miles from civilization, and the only human presence in the entire region is the hardy and nomadic Himba people.

The Kunene River

The life-giving Kunene River forms the northern boundary of the concession, creating a verdant oasis which supports populations of desert adapted animals and is home to some of Southern Africa's rarest birds. On all sides the Kunene is surrounded and contrasted by towering desert mountains and endless sand dunes that overpower the landscape with a mystical sense of 'other woldliness'.

The luxury tents

The elegant camp is set beneath a stand of large shady Albida trees on the edge of the rushing Kunene. Each of the six spacious tented rooms is en suite, with glass accordion doors leading onto a private wooden deck and furnishings artistically crafted from local trees. The common area is similarly constructed using Yellow Wood, fringed thatching, wicker and rattan to effect a rustically refined and beautiful ambience.

A young Himba girl

The Serra Cafema area is home to the highly traditional Himba people, one of the last true nomadic cultural groups in Africa. The camp is often visited by the native Ovahimba families who live in the nearby vicinity. This affords guests a unique cultural opportunity to interact with these fascinating people and learn about their life-style and traditions.

Quad-biking on the dunes

Time at Serra Cafema is spent enjoying the breath-taking landscape scenes that typify this corner of the Kaokaveld. The sand dunes of the Hartmann Valley, to the south of the camp, are traversed using special eco-quad bikes, which create minimal environmental disturbance. Walking trails in the remote mountain and river valleys are another highlight for those who enjoy foot safaris, while morning and evening boat trips on the River provide guests the opportunity to view some of the Kunene's birdlife and enormous crocodiles .

Serra Cafema offers a surreal desert experience, with landscapes that will leave one awe-struck by their beauty. This remote camp provides a luxurious base for a privileged few to experience and immerse themselves in the vast and delicate eco-system that is the northern Namib.
