ZAMBIAPORTFOLIO |
| Zambia is a vast, and relatively sparsely populated, country. At roughly 300,000 square miles, it is equal in size to the Dakotas, Iowa, and Minnesota combined, and is home to only about 9 million people. The country lies at the heart of south-central Africa and is, in many ways, a transition zone between the habitats and eco-systems of southern and eastern Africa. Large swathes of Zambia are given over to wilderness and wildlife. The country boasts 19 National Parks and 31 Game Management Areas, and offers some of the most untrammelled game reserves in Africa. The South Luangwa and Lower Zambezi National Parks are Zambia's two premier 'big game' destinations. Most of Zambia's other reserves suffered heavy widlife losses during the 1970s and '80s in the face of unrestricted poaching, but the last decade has seen a most encouraging turnaround, with game numbers recovering across most of the country's wildlife areas. In all, Zambia is an 'upcoming' safari destination with much to offer the African adventurer looking for good game-viewing in combination with an 'off the beaten track' sense of wilderness and space. Like Zimbabwe, Zambia is an adventurous safari destination, offering a range of activities including walking and canoeing safaris.
