DUMA TAU CAMP

The Linyanti Reserve, on which Duma Tau is located, is an enormous private concession, comprising nearly 300,000 acres of prime wilderness area in the far north-east of Botswana. It is bordered to the north by the Linyanti River, and to the east by the Chobe National Park, and contains two thirds of the length of the mysterious Savuti Channel.

The Savuti Channel is famous for its lions

Apart from its sheer size, the most remarkable feature of the Linyanti Reserve is the diverse range of habitats that it encompasses. The Linyanti River is bordered by floodplains very similar to those of the Okavango Delta, as well as extensive grasslands, while the interior of the concession consists of vast mopane forests and acacia bushveld. This diversity of habitat in turn supports a wide array of wildlife, and this area is particularly well known for its huge herds of elephants (probably the largest herds in Africa), and the lions of the savuti channel (featured in National Geographic documentaries).

The comfortable interior of a tent

Duma Tau camp itself is built under a shady grove of mangosteen trees, overlooking a large hippo-filled lagoon within the Linyanti waterway system. Its ten large, luxuriously appointed rooms are raised off the ground on polished wooden decks. They are set under thatch with canvas walls, allowing guests to enjoy the night sounds of Africa from the comfort of their beds. The bathroom facilities are en-suite, and each room also features an outside shower. There is a dining room, living room, bar area and plunge pool, also raised on wooden decks, with fabulous views.

Open safari vehicles

Activities at Duma Tau focus on the wildlife of the area, with day and night game drives offering fabulous opportunities to view, firsthand and at close range, Africa's whole spectrum of diurnal and nocturnal creatures. With the exception of rhinos, virtually all other species of African animals are represented in good numbers on the reserve. Nature walks allow for closer inspection of some of the smaller aspects of the eco-system, while the camp's pontoon facilitates access to the Linyanti River, and a different perspective on animals as they come to the river to drink.

Guests are also offered the opportunity to wait at hides, from where they can view and photograph animals at close range without disturbance. All activities are led by professional guides and/or trackers, who are carefully chosen for their knowledge and experience of the bush, and receive extensive training to ensure that your encounters with the African wilderness are exciting, informative, and safe.

Elephant in the Linyanti River

Duma Tau is a great camp set on one of Botswana's most extensive and game-rich private concessions. It enjoys a fabulous location, offering the best of both the dry Savuti Channel, and the wetlands surrounding the Linyanti River, while the camp itself provides all the comforts and features that anyone could ask for combined with the adventure of a tented camp experience.

Eco-tourism angle

The concession to the Linyanti Reserve belongs to a leading southern Africa conservation figure, and the reserve is managed by Wilderness Safaris, one of the most ecologically-minded camp operators in southern Africa. Although hunting is technically permitted on the concession, the owner and managers have waived their rights to allow hunting on the Reserve, thereby foregoing around US$300,000 in annual revenues so that the animals have the best possible opportunity to prosper, and guests have the best possible game-viewing experience. Staff are also involved in game counts and censuses to monitor the conservation efforts on the reserve.
