SOUTH AFRICA'S DRAKENSBERG MOUNTAIN RANGE

The lush greenery of the Drakensberg in summer

Named 'Drakensberg' (dragon mountains) by the early Dutch Voortrekkers, and 'oKhahlamba' (barrier of spears) by the native Zulus, this impressive and spectacular range of mountains is Southern Africa's highest (over 11,000 feet), and one of the longest in Africa. Besides its scenic beauty and pristine wilderness, it also houses an enormous collection of ancient San rock-art. It is a wonderfully unspoiled environment for hiking, camping, and simply absorbing the tranquility of nature.
