Elephant Back Safaris
For decades, African elephants were considered "untrainable". They are significantly larger and more aggressive than their Asian counterparts, and the thought of riding the world's largest land mammal was considered preposterous. This all changed when Randall Moore brought a small herd of circus elephants from the USA to Africa, and introduced the concept of elephant back safaris as a stepping stone to reintroducing captive born African elephants into the wild. There is something genuinely spellbinding and poignant about rambling through the African wilderness on the back of an animal that is indigenous to the ecosystem. Being seated on a gently swaying perch 14 feet above the ground offers a unique and almost surreal perspective on the African bush and its denizens, an experience that is not soon forgotten. A handful of destinations and locations around southern Africa offer the opportunity to interact with and ride African elephants, an experience that, in itself is intriguing and highly educational. But Abu Camp remains the only safari camp in a true wilderness setting that offers genuine elephant back safaris.
