Migration Routes Safari

Migration Routes Safari | Luxury African Safari Vacations | Classic Africa

Luxury African Safari Vacations | Migration Routes Safari | Classic AfricaThis ten day safari explores the contrasts, extremes and continually moving game of northern Botswana: from camping on islands in the Okavango Delta, to roving the game rich plains of the dry Savuti marsh, and watching elephant herds congregate seasonally along the Linyanti River. The safari either starts or ends with a boat cruise on the Chobe River and a night in Victoria Falls.

To optimize exploration, a variety of transport modes is used: private charter flights (dotted lines on adjacent map), game-drive transfers (solid lines on map), and exclusive combination mokoro-boat-land transfers provide both a birds-eye view and an in-depth experience of the contrasting landscapes of Botswana. A unique feature that sets this safari apart from the competition is that the majority of the safari is conducted on private concessions, well away from the high volume areas of National Parks. Night-drives and sensitive off-road driving is allowed in certain areas. A maximum of eight guests are accommodated on this fully serviced safari, which is accompanied by a guide and camp staff.

Day 1: Toka Leya Camp (or River Club), Victoria Falls

After arrival in Livingstone you will be met by a representative and transferred directly to a guided tour of Victoria Falls, one of the seven Natural Wonders of the World. At over a mile wide and 350 feet deep, it is the largest sheet of falling water on earth. The evening will be spent at either Toka Leya Camp or The River Club on the upper Zambezi River.

Day 2, 3 & 4: Chobe River and Linyanti Adventurer Camp

After a full breakfast, we depart Zambia and enter the Chobe National Park in Botswana by way of the Kazungula crossing, a point where the four countries of Botswana, Zambia, Zimbabwe and Namibia meet. The Chobe is famous for its vast herds of elephants and unique species such as the elusive puku and Chobe bushbuck that move to the river over the midday period. We enjoy a Chobe River boat cruise (and lunch) on a catamaran-style shaded boat, followed by a vehicle transfer to the Linyanti Reserve. The drive takes us through Chobe National Park, where there are more game viewing opportunities, from predators to the elusive sable antelope. After this wildlife portion of the drive we journey through some of the remote villages of northern Botswana, getting a rare glimpse of the traditional way of life of the people of this land, all explained by the guide.

The Linyanti is an area of great biological diversity, incorporating the Linyanti River, marshes, and floodplains, as well as the dry Savuti Channel, acacia bushveld habitat, and extensive mopane forest. Herbivores and predators gravitate back and forth according to season between the Linyanti and the Savuti Marshes, and our exact itinerary differs seasonally to take advantage of these movement patterns. On one of our days in the area we depart on an early morning activity through the private Linyanti Reserve, taking in the changing landscapes, from riverine to savannah habitats. We enjoy lunch on a shaded deck, with a sweeping view of the Linyanti River. After a siesta in hammocks, we enjoy a leisurely canoe trip (depending on hippos!) before returning to camp in the early evening.

Migration Routes Safari | Luxury African Safari Vacations | Classic Africa - Luxury African SafarisAccommodation at our Adventurer Camp is in 3m x 3m dome tents which are pre-erected by the camp staff. These tents are well ventilated with a veranda and private hand basins in front of each tent. Camp beds, bedrolls with crisp linen, feather duvets and pillows, towels and all amenities (soap, shower gel and conditioning shampoo) are provided. In addition, each tent has a mini luggage rack, a shared bedside table, coir mat (inside and outside), and a 12v reading light. Hot water bottles and blankets are provided in winter.

Migration Routes Safari | Luxury African Safari Vacations | Classic Africa - Best Luxury African SafarisThe bathrooms are en-suite with the entrance to the canvas-wrap open air bathroom (zip door) through the rear of tent. There is a serviced en-suite bucket shower - with hot water available whenever guests require it. The bathroom in each tent has a short-drop toilet (Xigera Mokoro Trail has chemical toilets), with a separate toilet near the main area available for use during the day. The evening camp is lit by paraffin hurricane lanterns and a good campfire. Delicious meals are prepared by safari staff on the campfire, adding to the atmosphere of adventure. Dining is under the stars, although a bush dining tent is erected in case of rain.

Days 5, 6 & 7 : Khwai Adventurer Camp - North-eastern Okavango Delta

epart by light aircraft to Khwai Adventurer Camp, located on a private concession adjoining the Moremi Game Reserve. The Khwai Concession is one of the most diverse areas in northern Botswana, and features a wide range of exciting wildlife habitats from forests and floodplains, to wetlands and grasslands.

Migration Routes Safari | Luxury African Safari Vacations | Classic Africa - Luxury African SafarisThe narrow Khwai Channel is home to large mammals such as hippo and crocodile with buffalo and red lechwe often seen grazing along the fringe. The beautiful riverine woodland found along the river provides further sanctuary to birds, primates and leopard. Activities focus around day and night game drives, nature walks and seasonal mekoro excursions. Away from the river there is a wonderful mix of acacia and leadwood trees of varying sizes leading into mopane woodland. The latter, together with the permanent presence of water, attracts large numbers of elephant to the area. Larger predators include lion, wild dog and spotted hyaena, while birdlife found here is just as varied thanks to the wide range of habitats.

Days 8 & 9: Xigera Mokoro Trail - Okavango Delta

Today we fly by light aircraft to the watery paradise of the private Xigera concession, deep within the permanent Delta in the Moremi Game Reserve. There is no better way to experience the beauty and diversity of the Okavango than to travel through it by mokoro, walking and camping out along the way in our Adventurer Camps.

Migration Routes Safari | Luxury African Safari Vacations | Classic Africa - Best Luxury African SafarisTransport is by mokoro, punted by BaYei boatmen. The experience is aimed at exposing the remote and permanently flooded inner Delta, and understanding the incredible intricacy and complexity of the Okavango ecosystem. With a focus on mokoro and walking, we keep a distance from large, dangerous game, concentrating instead on species like the elusive sitatunga antelope and graceful red lechwe. Birdlife is plentiful, with over 400 species having been identified in the Okavango Delta. Here, in a secluded private camp under a profusion of stars, one may enjoy the exquisite tranquillity of the Delta night punctuated by the calls of owls and nightjars and the distant grunting of a Hippo.

Day 10: Transfer to Maun Airport

Bid farewell to the adventure as we transfer by light aircraft to Maun Airport.
