Kafue's Rivers and Plains
Kafue National Park is one of the largest Parks in Africa: at around 9,000 square miles it is larger than the state of New Jersey. This enormous and pristine wilderness area is home to an impressive variety of big game including lion, leopard, cheetah, elephant, buffalo and hippo. In addition, the Kafue conserves several species of special interest including Lichtenstein's hartebeest, sable, roan, puku, the diminutive oribi, and lechwe in their thousands. With almost 500 bird species, Kafue is truly a diverse African Park and one of the last "wild frontiers".
This excellent value safari focuses on three different areas within the Park, including the Kafue and Lufupa Rivers, and the vast Busanga Plains. A combination of charter flights and overland driving provides both a birds-eye view and an in-depth experience of the contrasting landscapes of the Kafue. All three camps are comfortable and stylish featuring rooms with private en-suite bathroom facilities and real beds. A maximum of eight guests are accommodated on this fully serviced safari, which is accompanied by an experienced professional guide.
Days 1, 2 and 3: Lufupa Tented Camp, Kafue River
Arrive early morning at Lusaka or Livingstone Airport, where you are met by a representative of Sefofane Air Charters who will transfer you by light aircraft to Kafue National Park. Your private guide will meet you at the airstrip from where it is a short drive to Lufupa Tented Camp.
Days 4 and 5: Musanza Tented Camp, Busanga PlainsDepart Lufupa for an early morning game-drive transfer to Musanza Tented Camp. Musanza Tented Camp is located in the southern sector of the game-rich Busanga Plains, the "jewel" of the Kafue. Accommodation consists of four well-appointed tents with expansive views of the spectacular wildlife that frequents the grassy plains. Each tent has an en suite bathroom with flush loo and bucket shower. The main dining and bar area are tented and situated under a majestic canopy of trees. The simple bush style of this camp ensures a traditional "camping" feel without sacrificing necessary comforts.
Days 6 and 7: Busanga Bush Camp, Busanga Plains
After an early breakfast, we depart for a morning game drive transfer to Busanga Bush Camp, located in the north-western sector of the Busanga Plains. Depending on water levels in the Lushimba Channel, the transfer may include a short wetland crossing by makoro (dug out canoe). The next two nights provide further opportunity to explore the Busanga's abundant "big game" and birdlife, via day and night game drives.
Busanga Bush Camp accommodates just eight guests in four well appointed rooms constructed of reed and canvas, each offering spectacular views of the the open grasslands in front of camp. The camp is nicely shaded on a vegetated tree-island of sycomore fig trees. The common areas are under canvas and, like the rooms, are sited to maximize views of the plains and their resident herds of antelope.
Day 8: Safari ends in Lusaka or Livingstone After a shortened morning game-drive, enjoy a helicopter transfer (12 minutes) over the Busanga Plains to Busanga Airstrip; connect by shared charter flight to Lusaka (or Livingstone) Airport, where the safari ends.
